METAL BRACES

Metal braces are the oldest and most common form orthodontic treatment.. They are applied by the orthodontic specialist when the patient wishes to align the teeth of the upper, lower jaw or both at the same time.  

How do metal braces work?

Braces consist of small metal parts called hooks.
Each hook is placed individually on each tooth, covering the front surface of the tooth.
A special wire joins the hooks together, essentially guiding the teeth into the desired position, with the help of rubber or metal attachments.

This method of orthodontic treatment is addressed to both children as well as for children and adults. However, most adults today choose more discreet methods for aligning their teeth.  

At what age are metal braces applied to children?

Metal braces are applied to children and adolescents when the process of replacing the deciduous teeth with permanent teeth has been completed.
The ages at which this process is completed are approximately 10-14 years. In any case, however, the appropriate age for the placement of braces is individualized and based on the individual dental development of each child. The orthodontist, is the competent person who will assess the individual needs of the young patient and then determine the ideal time to start the treatment and estimate the length of time that will be required to complete it.

When should the child’s first appointment with the orthodontist take place?

The child’s first meeting with the orthodontist is recommended well before the decision to start orthodontic treatment.
The age of seven is ideal for the Orthodontist to identify potential orthodontic problems and even intervene when necessary.  

How do today’s braces differ from the older ones?

It is true that metal braces are the oldest method of orthodontic treatment.
But that does not mean that the method has not evolved over the years.
Today’s braces differ significantly in both shape and size from the older braces that were used in previous decades.
In particular, modern metal braces are smaller in size, more discreet and more comfortable.
